Day 2: Even Hoterer!

July 27th, 2021

After 5 hours of very restful sleep, I packed up my bags for the journey to Davenport. I went downstairs to nurse my hangover by having a nice breakfast with Jerry. We got on the bus at 10am and the air conditioning was working only slightly better than yesterday, which was not good for my hangover. After our morning tequila shots Joel had a completely disgusting liqueur to try called Malort. It took a long time for the taste to leave my mouth. After some trail mix and my second beer, my hangover was much better, but the heat was getting really bad. We passed the time on the bus talking about the glory days of the Saints at Midway Stadium.

Our tour group descends on a hotel that's a bit too nice for us

We stopped at a brewery in Davenport before getting to our hotel, dad and I shared some fish and chips. The Black Hawk Hotel is one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed at. It's a beautiful old building with a grand lobby, where smooth big band swing is always playing. I fell asleep when we got to the room and woke up just in time for the ballgame.

Such a beautiful ballpark. On the river with the bridge and carnival rides in the outfield.

We got ready and walked in the miserable heat down to Modern Woodmen Park. We only missed the first batter. It's a cool stadium with carnival rides in the outfield. It was a pretty good game between the River Bandits and the South Bend Cubs. The Cubs won. Final score was 11-4... but in 10 innings! You do the math.

Our gang at the basement martini bar.

By the end of the game my clothes were a few shades darker from being soaked through with sweat. The bus took us back to the hote,l where my dad threw in the towel. I took a shower and went to check out the martini bar and bowling alley in the basement. A lot of our group was there. Jeanie and the Rev had never gone to the game. While I was ordering my drink Jeanie was telling me "This poor bartender had to deal with us all day" the bartender said "Hell, you were here before I was!". After a couple martinis the crowd started to dwindle, eventually down to just Brillo and I. He was educating me on country rock, particularly on the history of Graham Parson. Around one he called it quits, but I decided to get a quick look at the video arcade that was a block away. The arcade had decided to close early but there was a dive bar called Boozies that was looking lively and sure lived up to their name. I spent a fun hour in there, getting to know the locals and plugging the jukebox.

A picture I took of Boozie's the next day.
